  • Programme Information


    The Master of Science in Data Science (Concentration in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management) programme is jointly offered by the Department of Mathematics, Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU), and the Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Business and Management, Beijing Normal-Hong Kong Baptist University (BNBU). It is developed based on the MSc in Mathematical Finance (MFIN) programme launched by HKBU in 2013.


         The principal aim of the programme is to equip students with advanced knowledge and skills in Data Science so that they can apply them to real-world problems in the financial industry. The curriculum places special emphasis on the integration of mathematics, data science, and finance, helping students not only master the application of cutting-edge technologies but also deeply understand the underlying mathematical principles. Graduates will possess the capability to identify problems in the financial and business sectors that can be solved by Data Science and to propose effective solutions. Upon fulfilling all programme requirements, students will be awarded the Master of Science in Data Science degree by HKBU.

  • Admission Requirements

    Academic Requirement

    Possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering, Business; or other related majors.


    Mathematical Proficiency

    Be proficient in Basic Mathematics


    Language Requirements

    Applicants whose first language is not English, or previous degree not obtained with English as medium of instruction are required to prove their language abilities by means of performance in any one of the tests listed below:

    • IELTS(Academic)≥6.0(Reading or Listening≥6.5); or

    • TOEFL(iBT)≥79.

    *Test results of IELTS Indicator/IELTS One Skill Retake, TOEFL-iBT Home Edition or Duolingo English Test will not be considered.

    Required Application Materials


    1) Official Academic Transcript

    Either in Chinese or in English, with the official stamp of the university. If the transcript does not indicate the Cumulative Grade Point Average (cGPA) and the full scale Grade Point Average (GPA), proof of cGPA or full scale GPA should be provided.

    2) University Degree and Graduation Certificate

    Scanned copies of the original documents are required; a graduating student can provide a letter of enrollment status with the official stamp of the university.

    3) Two Reference Letters

    Two reference letters with the signature of the referee (either in Chinese or in English); students can also provide the contact information of their referees via the online application system.

    4) English Proficiency Test Report

    Provide the corresponding English proficiency test report according to the English requirements of each programme;if the medium of instruction at the applicant's previous university was English, students can provide a proof of English as the medium of instruction.

    5) Personal Statement

    Either in Chinese or in English, within 500 words. Please fill in your personal statement in the designated location in the application system. Attachment uploaded is not accepted.

    6) Scanned Copy of Identity Document

    Students from Mainland China: ID card (both sides);

    Students from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan: Mainland Travel Permit;

    International student: Passport.

    7) CV

    Either in Chinese or in English.

    8) Any Other Supporting Documents (not compulsory)

    Including but not limited to: portfolio (published papers, GitHub, personal websites, etc.), professional qualification certificates, and award certificates, if any.
